This project investigates architecture’s potential to ‘de-territorialise’ space through placemaking. Informed by a perspective grounded in Indigenous Australian Culture, the project removes the necessity for, and inevitability of, boundaries between people and place. As both an active response to the Uluru Statement from the Heart and co-envisioned with Twofold Aboriginal Corporation Jigamy. The key programmatic ambition is the development of a multifunctional canoe workshop and gallery. This brief provides the local community with active spaces for working and interaction, providing a method for engagement and reflection through the production of space. A healing and breathing, between Country, and people.

Tessellate reflects an approach to rural vernacular design that communicates an appreciation to the unique nature that inhabits the site and engages with the prominent community of the Twofold Bay site. The expression of curvature allows the concavity to enhance the role of spaces and provide views to all angles. The site offers a communal hub that displays a multifunctional space that suits to community needs through the articulation of detailing and flexibility. Through this, Tessellate hosts many services being the reception to camping areas, a café and a shop which cultivates native food sources historically used by the aboriginals.

Singing Water arose from my fascination with the profound effects of sound on all aspects of the natural world. Research explored the science of cymatics and the presence of mathematical ratios in the natural world, Indigenous Songlines and the non-material substructure of Country, and the ability of Country to be conscious. Alongside engagement with our co-creators, Twofold Aboriginal Corporation, the proposal developed into an alteration and additions extension of their existing mud brick office with specific focus on a self-sustaining water cycle. This co-envisioning process raised the ultimate question; how can a comprehensive understanding of Country influence the built environment to give autonomy to both the community and the bioregion in which it is located?

Arboreal Unity is a project that seeks to lightly but meaningfully improve the amenity at the Two Fold Aboriginal Corporation at Jigamy Farm. The project has taken place through an ongoing process of co- envisioning, where careful consideration of principles of country and a grounded ethos of respect, humility and integrity has resulted in a proposal that attempts to honour the wishes and knowledge of the Two Fold community. Both Greg Campbell’s account of elder Lulu’s teachings in ‘Total Reset’2 and the Uluru Statement from the Heart3 have been carefully read and deeply listened to, creating an environment of understanding, awareness and reciprocity. The proposal addresses the needs expressed by the co- envisioners initially, expanding the available office space and providing an improved and larger commercial kitchen.4 Further, the project proposal involved a redevelopment of the existing stage on site. A design concerned with flexibility and humility on the site made from locally sourced Spotted Gum aims to minimise the impact on country by expanding and contracting as needed to fulfill the program. Primarily this portion of the project has been considered to accommodate the annual Giiyong Festival. The project aims to be a synthesis of knowledge of the First Nations peoples and the contemporary sensibilities of kinetic architecture.

‘Breathing Deeply’ is a conceptual body of work that looks at the knowledge embedded in Country and the relationship between people and the built landscape. As heavily discussed in Greg Campbell’s ‘Total Reset, Realigning with our timeless holistic blueprint for living’ there is an urgency to transition from a dichotomous way of inhabiting the world to an autonomous, self-sufficient way of life. In order to achieve a sustainable and holistic blueprint for living, there needs to be a complete overhaul of current social, financial and economical systems. Taking a Country-centred approach is no longer an option, it is imperative for the greater good and highly relevant to the architectural profession.

For First Nations peoples, Country represents a sacred connection where land, people, and all living beings coexist in a deep, enduring relationship. It is more than a physical space; it is a living entity, embodying ancestral wisdom, identity, and memory. This project envisions architecture as an extension of the Yuin community’s spiritual and ecological bond with their ancestral Country. Using locally sourced rammed earth, it honours the land’s materiality and stories, fostering sensory immersion through natural elements. Rooted in deep listening, it bridges Aboriginal knowledge with sustainable design, creating a space for healing, storytelling, and cultural continuity.

“I am the land. I’m not part of it. I am it.” This project is a poetic exploration co-envisioned with Twofold Aboriginal Corporation, reimagining Jigamy as a space that bridges and preserves Indigenous culture and history. Inspired by the Uluru Statement from the Heart, Total Reset, and Dadirri—the art of deep listening—the master plan envisions Jigamy as an open-sky museum, a place to feel at home. Drawing parallels between Aboriginal and Indian traditions, it incorporates songlines, Dreamtime, and nature’s rhythms, cultivating an interconnected, regenerative space where everyone belongs. This way, Jigamy embodies the Indigenous spirit of the Southeast Coast.

The Thesis proposal looks at the design of a star observation focused glamping retreat, for the Twofold Aboriginal Corporation site of Jigamy, in Pambulah NSW. The research and proposed project look at re-interpreting the concept of vernacular architecture as a material reflection of cultural memory and a mode of communal production rather than a specific building style. Advocating for a ‘Microlocale’ methodology to design, the research integrates an ecological lens and cosmological approach into architectural practice as a means of resistance against the homogenising tendencies of neoliberalism. Thus restoring human habitation as a collectively driven, climatically responsive process, realigning harmony between the built environment and Country, and our understanding of the self as an inherit part of the universe.
